The Good, The Bad, The Ugly Side of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)

THE GOOD, BAD, UGLY SIDE OF NYSC
The essence of National Youth Service Corps has been a bone of contention among all and sundry (academias, celebrities...) from time immemorial - one party supporting its continuity for national integration while the other negates it totally for its shallow impact on graduates and his after life. Having served some years back, I bring you the joy, shocks and the tears of the scheme "NYSC" termed - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Side of the Game.

GOOD SIDE OF NYSC

The beauty of NYSC lies in its Three Weeks Orientation Course filled with lot of electrifying moments with people from other regions of the country. The camping for three weeks is always like a lifetime in itself because it leaves corpers with more than enough memories (bad/good) to live with.

NYSC Enjoyment
 Without mincing word, here are the good side of NYSC;
  • It enhances spirit of nationalism and patriotism
  • It preaches love amidst ethno-religious issues
  • It encourages self on life after school
  • It breeds spirit of brotherhood
  • It creates new bond - relationship (friendship, courtship, marriage)

BAD SIDE OF NYSC

The negative aspect of NYSC is arguably more than the benefits by percentage which leaves the scheme on a shaky stand. What the eyes of corp members see today in their so called fatherland is nothing compared to suffering and it antecedents. Some states don't pay a dime without declining the posting of corp members to them - so horrible.
Noticeably, the scheme also have some special powers in itself viz;.
    NYSC Output
  • power to crash relationship (dating and marriages)
  • power to control one's progress (since majority of the organisations request for NYSC cert)
  • power to affect one's academic pursuit (sways people attention from academics to MONEY MONEY...)
  • power to live in assumption (get your NYSC cert - the ultimate ticket to employment)

UGLY SIDE OF NYSC

The worrisome aspect of the scheme is the inhumane treatment experienced by call members in their place of primary assignment (POP). Such personal experiences of some corpers have left their families in squalor, tears and everlasting agony. This is because, they are mostly
  • victims of ethno-religious crises,
  • victims of bad infrastructures (road to be precise),
  • victims of cultural practices,
  • victims of sporadic shooting leading to injuries, scars and even carnage,
On another note, some corpers experience bizarre treatment in the course of establishing a means of livelihood in their fatherland - they are mostly subjected to face outrageous bills to join their association (welding, hairdressing.).

At the moment, a whole lot are serving their fatherland while the new entrants are still enjoying
their moment of life in their respective camp zones. We have been there, We have seen it all.
TO ALL CORPERS, kindly remember and prepare for the life after NYSC.
