How Feasible is it to Follow COVID-19 Guidelines in Nigerian Public Tertiary Institutions?

Image
A big thanks to all and sundry that made the delivery of nine months pregnancy a success in Nigeria. This is just to acknowledge the prolonged strike action of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) against the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) in the year 2020. It wasn't an easy tussle though. During these times, a lot of events unfolded: some students drifted towards entrepreneurship, some were victims of sexual violence, some began their marital journey unexpectedly, while most lecturers were financially unstable. To rekindle the nation's academic activities, physical reopening of public schools shut down since March 2020 was slated for 18th January, 2021 by the FGN. To think this is not feasible on the count of meeting up with COVID-19 guidelines is debatable. First and foremost, to physically open tertiary institutions in Nigeria is easy-difficult considering some situational factors around the clarion call. It's indeed very easy to open the gate to the four

How to Reduce the Spread of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) at all Cost in Nigeria

Image
The wave of Coronavirus Disease popularly known as COVID-19 has been unimaginable across the globe. What happened to the powerful nations of the world like the United States, China, Italy, United Kingdom, Spain within the span of four months during these times are disheartening to the core. Developing nations like Nigeria and other parts of Africa had a very mild experience of the global pandemic. At the comprehensive level, the pandemic has successfully turned the year (2020) upside down on all grounds. Economies have crashed. Mortality rates have increased drastically. Unemployment rate has been jaw-dropping. Businesses have collapsed. Religious homes have been shut down to mention but a few. In order to contain this dreadful disease, public sensitization at all levels of society is important. The guidelines created by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) serves as a point of sensitization in today's world, Nigeria is no exceptio

Eight (8) Natural Gift that Comes with Harmattan Season in Nigeria

Image
Naturally, every 365 days has its peculiarity, depending on the month and  God's preferred timing. Such seasonal changes have different specificity, based on the region, country or the continent in question e.g. Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and so on. However, the basic seasonal changes in Nigeria are Rainy season, Dry season and Harmattan season, which is a subunit of the dry season. By nature, these periods come with both pleasant and unpleasant gifts for human beings irrespective of their profession or location. This is the reason human beings never stop complaining when it comes to any season. For instance, when its' the raining period they say it is disturbing their activities while the farmers amongst them would be grateful for their plants and animal. In the dry season, majority keep complaining of scorch that follows the sun. In essence, this supports the notion that  human wants are insatiable . Four Medical Conditions that Needs Constant Care than HIV/AIDS Today

Image
Basically, the most feared virus or medical status by human existence is Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) without belittling the likes of Ebola Virus, Lassa Fever, Zika Virus and lots more viruses that have rocked, shaken and threatened the continuity of human being. Regardless of these medical conditions` and its prowess, there lie four basic medical conditions that need constant care than HIV/AIDS.  The existence of these four basic medical conditions seems way older than the discovery of HIV/AIDS alongside other viral viruses/diseases, but, with adequate care, the situation can be managed, controlled and outlived. On the contrary, the lackadaisical attitude of the carrier towards the condition can only lead to sudden breakdown (leading to public disgrace at times) or a demise of the carrier prematurely or unexpectedly.  However, the basic four medical conditions described above are; Ulcer, Asthma, Diabetes Mellitus, and Rheuma

How to Save People from Committing Suicide in a Breathtaking Economy

Image
When someone we love or acquainted with commits suicide, the most common question on our lips is 'Why did he/she do that?' especially in cases where the victim did not leave behind any clue as to the reason why. I feel our lips should be dancing not to gossips nor our assumptions as to what made the victim resort to suicide but to what we could have done to help as family, friends, neighbour or acquaintance.  Many a time, we respond to people's indirect cry for help in very harsh manner. We say things like 'If you don't like it, go and die', 'Do you feel you are the only one with problems in this world?', e.t.c. Though, those words are not intended to hurt other people's feelings but it could happen to do just that.  READ ALSO; How to Connect Speedily to Your Future We would be surprised at how much a 'simple accidental smile' or a 'good morning', could make another person's day better. How to know whether you are Underweight or Overweight??

Image
Improving body composition is essential to developing and maintaining optimal health. To measure body composition, Body Mass Index (BMI) has been regarded as a standard means of measurement. BMI is an attempt to quantify the amount of tissue mass (muscle, fat and bone) in an individual and as a result categorize that same person as either underweight, normal weight, overweight or obese in correlation with the attained value. BMI is therefore most common and simplest way to determine if you are underweight or overweight, as it only make use of the individual's Weight and Height. BMI is defined as follows: ratio of body weight to height² According to this  formulae,  it is believed that  a person  with a high weight  in relation to  height has a higher BMI and vice versa. Various studies support the fact that an increased BMI invariably means an increased risk of various cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, stroke etc. After knowing the BMI, it is necessary to  know

Reasons Why President Muhammadu Buhari and co Seek Medical Care Abroad

Image
The notion "health is wealth" is not just an assertion to the rich as against the poor who placed survival first, it is rather a do or do affair. In essence, the rich people "World Leaders", "Business Moguls", "Celebrities" seems to spend more money checking and rechecking their health status periodically. Due to the differences in the level of development across countries, people choose either to seek medical care within or outside their locals. The case of African leaders is a pointer to the level of their structural health imbalances which amongst other grant them the peripheral seat as used by Immanuel Wallerstein. In simplicity, there are many developed nations of today (Cuba, America, United Kingdom, Malaysia, India, Israel...) which are way ahead of others (sub-Saharan Africa in particular) by standard of health care service and its delivery to urban-rich, urban-poor, rural-rich, and rural-poor. Signs, Symptoms, and Management of Conjunctivitis (Often called Apollo)

Image
The Eyes - "Window of the Soul", "General Overseer of the Body", "Key to Sail through Day and Night" for no reason can be joked with by any sensible individual. In essence, it is the most crucial of all other organs - nose, mouth, skin, ear. This bilateral organ embedded in the ventral section of the human skull is always exposed to various microbes, allergies or chemical irritants one way or the other and all of this  leads to its inflammation.  Conjunctivitis (also called pink eye in North America, madrias eye in India and Apollo in this part of the world; Nigeria) is the  inflammation of the conjunctiva which is the outermost layer of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelid.  It is believed that this infection is usually caused by  micro-organisms (bacteria, virus, chlamydial) as well  as exposure to various allergens and chemical irritants for instance cigarette smoke, dust,  perfumes, foreign body in the eye (e.g Contact lens) In adu

Malaria: Everyday Diagnosis for an Average African Man

Image
Back to 1880, Malaria was derived from the Italian word mal'aria meaning "bad air". It was originally believed that swamp fumes in Rome were the cause of malaria, as outbreaks were a regular occurrence there. We made a little research on this infectious disease which is prevalent in tropical and subtropical areas of the world and wish to get our beloved viewers more enlightened. Understanding Malaria Malaria is a life-threatening blood disease caused by parasites transmitted to humans via the bite of the female  Anopheles mosquito (the only existing mosquito causing malaria). Plasmodium parasites??  Scientists believe that more than 100 types of Plasmodium parasites can infect a variety of species but they identified the types that specifically infect humans. Plasmodium falciparum: located worldwide  but predominantly in Africa. It kills about  1million  people every year. The type that causes most of the malaria cases in Nigeria. Plasmodium vi

Let it be echoed that all living entity (nation) had a touch of madness absorbed and taken in as a lifestyle in the world today. The touch started somewhere, somehow found its way through discovery, diffusion, and culture contact into the life of people which had been passed from one generation to the other. Although there is an element of sane in their insanity the acceptability of the latter surpasses the former. Globally, the riches of today are mostly accumulated through “insanity” which at one time been massively frowned at. What “insanity ponder in your heart? Are you lost here or kept in the dark? Divine Messengers' Messages to the Sick World

Image
The irony of life remains “soldier go, soldier come”. The world had witnessed the demise of people from across the globe with a little or no significant impact. The same way people move around the world, that same way they leave (mysteriously) with or without any traces.  It is thus observed, some individual had come into the world as if they created it due to their distinctive criteria – fearlessness, utterances, actions and reactions towards issues. In simplicity, their lifestyles does not gel with that of an ordinary being because they possess and demonstrated their uniqueness on different platforms viz; music (singing/dancing), literature (poem/poetry), art/craft (drawings), public speaking (politics, economy, religion). Above all, their impact during and beyond their existence left the world in an apologetic state. A lot had been said and done since the dawn of time which had led to restructuring of the social systems, re-orientation of human race, exposing of secrets

High Blood Pressure: Why Me?

Image
“I engage in exercise and I take low salt  diet. So why do I have high blood pressure?” Despite its astonishing prevalence, many people struggle with the diagnosis of high blood pressure, or hypertension. It’s worth exploring why, because being involved in you care is crucial for optimal blood pressure control. Certain features make any diagnosis easier to accept: First, people are more likely to accept a diagnosis if they have symptoms . Some diseases have clear causes: Down syndrome and older maternal age, HIV infection and contaminated needles. A smoker who learns he has lung cancer may not be shocked. But non-smokers who receive this diagnosis usually ask, “Why me?” People diagnosed with hypertension are often baffled, and many ask, “Why me?” This doubt makes sense, in light of the principles above. Symptoms make a diagnosis more real. But unlike many other illnesses, hypertension rarely causes symptoms. In fact it loves anonymity and it is ominously called the “Silent

Sleep; A Necessity for Healthy Living

Image
There is nothing in life that is more valuable than a fantastic health status i.e. poor state of any of these (body, mind and soul) can warrant a threat to one's degree of happiness. Happiness is therefore far more than the luxury of life possessed by mankind whose power cannot control "sleep". Sleep in a layman term means resting but believe me it is a little more than that. Sleep is a natural state in which the human mind and body get some rest (MIND AND BODY), the eyes is closed and consciousness is partly or completely lost meaning you are being hibernated or temporarily shut down. Naturally sleep comes with amazing benefits. Some of the benefits may surprise you  1. Less forgetfulness  Sleeping enough improves the memory and invariably you forget less. With less sleep, the brain gets tired, hence forgetting a lot.  2. Reduced emotional volatility  Sleep is vital for your emotional state. Lack of sleep ca
